“Kinda Bugging Me”: Shawn Mendes Just Broke His Silence On All Of The “Noise” Surrounding Him And Camila Cabello After Sabrina Carpenter Seemingly Lifted The Lid On Their Messy Love Triangle

If you’re new here, Shawn and Camila first started dating in 2019 but broke up in November 2021. It is thought that he and Sabrina started dating in February 2023, and they were repeatedly spotted together during this time.

The following month, sources confirmed to ET that Shawn and Sabrina were indeed “seeing each other,” but by April, Shawn was spotted kissing Camila at Coachella. 

Shawn and Camila remained together until June 2023, when a source told ET they’d called it quits again. 

“You’re so dumb and poetic / It's just what I fall for, I like the aesthetic / Every self-help book, you've already read it / Cherry-pick lines like they're words you invented," she sings in "Dumb & Poetic."

“Gold star for high-brow manipulation / And, ‘Love everyone,’ is your favorite quotation,” she continues. “Try to come off like you're soft and well-spoken / Jack off to lyrics by Leonard Cohen / Don't think you understand / Just 'cause you talk like one doesn't make you a man.”

And in “Sharpest Tool,” Sabrina sings: “I know you're not / The sharpest tool in the shed / We had sex, I met your best friends/ Then a bird flies by and you forget.”

Things got all the more awkward last month, when Sabrina performed “Taste” in front of both Shawn and Camila at the MTV VMAs, leaving fans gagged.

On Wednesday night, Shawn surprised his followers when he took to X to reply to a whole bunch of tweets, including ones about Camila. 

For context, earlier this week, Shawn said on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast: “I think Camila and I have just done the best job at preserving our private little fire of love for each other. Because no matter how strong mentally you are, when there are millions of people commenting on it, it's so hard not to be affected by it… This is real love, and it’s confusing and hard. I'm just lucky. She is an amazing human being.”

Needless to say, the whole thing caused a bit of flurry, with Shawn’s comments on the podcast already sparking speculation that he and Camila are back together, and his tweet fueling the fire. 

“I feel like you need to clarify what you meant with your last tweet just so the general public and Camila’s fandom don’t take your words and make them into something you might not have intended, does that make sense?” somebody tweeted Shawn. 

And at this point, the singer appeared to allude to the recent drama surrounding Sabrina’s album. 

“You say we’re just friends, but friends don’t know the way you…” Camila sings in a video from the performance, with the star pointedly putting a finger over her lips instead of singing the final word in the lyric, which is “taste” — the title of Sabrina’s hit song about the love triangle. 

Still, Camila doesn’t appear to hold any ill feeling toward Sabrina, and during a recent interview, she name-checked her as one of the trailblazers currently dominating the pop landscape. 

“It’s been such an exciting time for pop,” she told BBC Radio 1. “Like with BRAT, and Chappell [Roan], and Sabrina. It’s just been an exciting time for pop."
